Protection printed circuit board PCM PCB BMS battery management system for lithium battery lifepo4 li-ion

PCM(protection circuit module) or PCB (protection circuit board) is playing the main role of Lithium battery pack, applying on lipo battery pack, li-ion battery pack, lifepo4 battery pack. It protects battery pack from over charge, over discharge, over current and short circuit, to avoid short life cycle, low performance, fire even explosion

PCB protection printed circuit board or PCM is mainly used for low voltage pack, 1s 3.7v to 6s 22.2v for lithium ion battery, 1s 3.2v to 4s 12.8v for lifepo4 battery. For high voltage battery pack, BMS will be used, BMS is short for Battery Management System, it contains all circuit protection on PCB/PCM, and also it contains many other function like communication protocol, temperature monitor, battery SOC etc.

It is necessary to monitor state of each cell, meanwhile when discharge or charge, the BMS will balance voltage of each cell to avoid high voltage difference from each cell, or the battery will be discharged quickly and life cycles will be shorten, it will affect battery performance much.

Overall BMS will monitor items as below.

Voltage: total voltage and voltage of each battery cells

SOC (State of charge) or DOD (depth of discharge): percentage of battery charging

SOH (state of health): there are different angle of items to evaluate the battery health

Temperature: each cell temperature and overall temperature, ensure battery is operated at proper environment

Communication protocol: Not all BMS has this function, used to transfer signal and battery data to equipment, SMBUS I2C RS485 RS232 etc,

Bluetooth: Not all BMS has this function, it supports to view battery state from an APP on android or apple cellphone.

Besides, high discharge battery (20C and above) normally doesn’t need PCB or BMS, due to high cost, for these battery pack, it is very important to store them in low temperature environment and far away from combustible stuff. Balancing cables are used for this kind batteries when discharge and charge, similar function to balance module in BMS.

Protection current contains 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, 8A, 10A, 12A, 15A, 20A, 30A, 35A, 45A, 100A, 150A, 200A and more. The higher current, the more MOSFET (8204 8205 8205A 9004 etc) and IC will be used, the bigger size will be.

For the PCB PCM BMS, charge port and discharge port can be the same or different, same charge & discharge port will be in higher cost as it requires more IC or MOS
